It was the first (fully evolved)Hoenn starter shown in the main series.

I personally remember Ash getting his ass kicked by Blaziken better than him using his Sceptile later in Hoenn.

Blaziken is the most popular of its trio and was the first to appear in the anime. Game Freak also decided to insert Mega Blaziken as the XY early purchase gift and a tease for ORAS, which was in development at the time.

The Gallic rooster is also the national animal of France. It was a relevant choice for an overpowered early purchase promotion even regardless of ORAS - it just *also* worked perfectly as an early promotion/hint at what was coming next, which I guess is what got Blaziken the spot over any other rooster Pokémon.
