Now, I'll give you that they give you more control over what you want, what you do. However, those feeling of control over what you do in a world filled with monsters, are mostly personal, subjective. Mostly, because there's a part of me that agrees that having such control could lead to having a better experience overall.
On the other hand, I'd argue that a better argument against random encounters is that they artificially increase the total time you have to spend in the games, both because you have to, sometimes, go through the same Pokémon over and over and because you are having a random encounter, which leads to a battle (and/or escaping the encounter).
Overall, I don't mind overworld encounters as much as I used to, but I still prefer random encounters, if only because a polished system of habitats and behavior is a pipe dream (for now). As it is, seeing the Pokémon roam with shitty animations doesn't make (subjectively speaking) the world feel more alive. On the contrary, seeing them act the same way, over and over, with no changes, makes it look artificial, like they are just machines posted in the locations for you to sightsee.
