Intricacy conveys grandure and imposition which are traits that make legendaries unique compared to regular shitters. U Necrozma is already an example of why simple designs for legends come off as bland and underwhelming.

I think the real problem with its true form is what we need to do to get it. It's so dumb.. we have to merge him with one of the two legendaries, and then "ultra evolve" by making a z move... I think it really ruins everything with this form, and people would love it more if it was easier/more logical to get

Dialga Can be seen as a simple design because of its base form. It's like a simple form with "armors" added on him. While lunaala had complex shapes as its whole body.

The only areas with protrusions are the spines on its neck and its hips. I agree that the ones on its neck are unnecessary even if its based on an Amargasaur but the ones on it's hips are crucial to the design.

I don't think anyone else would back you up that's Dialga is a "simple" design. Every aspect of it is covered in needless details. Lunala, by contrast, has a big empty single-colored space for its wings and its back is totally barren. The details that do exist are to heighten the fact that it's a spooky moon bat. I couldn't tell you what the fuck most of the doodads and lines on Dialga's or Palkia's body are supposed to show off.

The one interesting thing about Dialga's body is its fin, which brings to mind both dinosaurs and clocks, so it fits.

I dislike that aspect of it's design. The fact that its entire body is compromised of just wings with no real torso makes it look more like a kite than a living thing.

Yeah they tried to do the kyurem thing again and fucked it up even harder.

A part of the simplistic designs in earlier generations was due to the graphical limitations of the games. Sure, this wasn’t the only reason, but it had a big part of it. And it’s also part of why designs in general have become more complex as the graphics have evolved. Anything is possible with something like Pokémon, but it’s not likely that we’ll see a “return to form” of the earlier generations unless nostalgia-pandering gets too intense.

Diagla is a complex design done right. Its colors easily reflect that of a diamon and it's shape allows it to maintain some feeling of being unique to go along with the steel typing. Remove the "armor" and it just looks weird. If you're truly determined about it, you could argue the cyan lines on his body represent timelines.

The key thing that truly makes Dialga work though is its silhouette. He works despite his details because his dinosaur + alien shape really helps him stand out among the other legendaries.
