Really like PKMN, obviously, grew up playing stuff like Digimon World, Monster Rancher (both kusoge but still good for a hoot), DQ-Monsters, SMT etc etc

anything else obscure that I might like that's similar? Curious if you guys know of any hidden gems. Thanks in advance.

pic related, it's a total pokemon rip-off but with short 2d sidescrolling races (very classic sonic feeling) instead of battles. it's not the best thing ever but it makes for a nice change of pace and there's breeding and shinies.

I unapologetically and unironically loved DQ Monsters: Joker and its sequel more than any Pokemon game I have ever played (and I've played since GSC). I wish to heaven it was more popular but for some reason it never caught on.

It's purely brand recognition. Dragon Quest is nowhere near as popular outside of Japan as it is inside, and pokemon was already cemented as the one monster catching game to most people by the time Joker was released.

I hate that we got the Joker 2 vanilla instead of Professional, but I can't blame them; it was only made because of a nasty bug, and it was a tragic case of bad timing.

I'll only talk of those which I played and it's completely possible that you don't know about :

The remake of DWM2 has a unique feature where you can design your own starting monster from a number of parts; you're able to mix and match them however you want, as well as choose their color, and even its gender.

Unfortunetly you cant play the second season of the game it self was released during time world was released but never brought to the west the update 1.3.0

No and yes, depending oh how granular you're getting. No, because the Joker subseries of the Monsters spinoff specifically ends at 3 Professional, and yes because a Dragon Quest Monsters game with Erik and Mia as the protagonists was announced some time ago as part of the spinoff's 20th anniversary. Hopefully that one gets localized, Joker 3's gameplay improvements would've made it the best monster collecting JRPG ever in my book if it weren't for the dogshit monster roster.

There's an old GBC game called Magi Nation that you might enjoy. It's kinda like Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh had a retarded baby. The biggest problem with the game is the massive difficulty spike that hits around the 2nd or 3rd dungeon. I can't remember where, I just remember a LOT of grinding to beat the boss of the dungeon.
