For context:
When I was younger my main exposure to the franchise was the card game and sometimes the anime. At this point in my life I didn't have consistent access to the internet, and the only game I played so far was Silver. I knew Rock type was a thing because of the anime and the Geodude line, and I never really looked deep into the series to know Fighting was an actual type. But sense in the first tcg Rock, Ground and Fighting types were all given the same symbol, so I just assumed the Machop line was Rock type aswell.
Also they're grey skin, rough exterior, and fact it was regularly depicted near mountains and holding a boulder like in pic related just further cemented the connection to rock type.
