could someone explain to me the appeal of Pokémon?

only experienced with it was the anime show and movies would air from time to time and we owned a single copy of Pearl yet me and brother had two DSs but is dumb kids and dumb parents didn't realize you needed another copy of the game to play with each other and didn't understand what wifi and the internet were since we were just kids and we also sucked at video games and never finished it

did i miss out on anything worthwhile?

also i'm zoomer turning 20 in august

It's like a JRPG, except the setting is ambiguously between 1995 and 2010 depending on the game and it doesn't take 100 hours to beat unless you want to complete the dex which is completely optional.

What the FUCK is the appeal of these games? Most of the time when I hate a game I can still understand why people like it but not with this shit. Think about what you actual do in these, think about what the “gameplay” is, remove the images of cartoon animals and the silly names for attacks and what do you get? You’re looking at a barebones menu, a couple of life bars and a stamina bar, and selecting one of the options over and over again (probably the same one or two as well) until either your bar or the opponents bar goes down, when you then (sometimes) switch to a new bar and a new selection of one or two menu options to click on. Then you do this hundreds of times over for the rest of the game. There is no reason for this to be a video game, it is mechanically simpler than the shitty mtg clone it spawned, it’s less engaging than doodling in your notebook during class, only a fucking subhuman could actually play this shit for more than ten minutes, it is nothing, the first level of the original super mario bros has more going on than an entire play through of one of these games. And I now i’ve also found out gamefreak is one of the only developers incompetent to give you a single save slot in the DS era and make it intentionally difficult to delete. What the fuck goes through your head while you play these? The foam that ends up coming out of your gaping retarded maw?

Tons of cute critters, and a simple rock-paper-scissors battle system that has a lot of "horizontal" elements (in the nitty-gritty of how Pokemon differ) should you chose to experiment with them, both in how what Pokemon you pick affects the difficultly of the story and in the multiplayer space where experience levels don't matter. That's how a series designed for grade school kids can have such a meticulous multiplayer scene, even if the underlying mechanics are just a handful of options.

If figuring out why a Scyther is different from a Spinirak is not inherently interesting to you, I would pass. A lot of the series legacy and continued limelight is the aftershocks of Pokemania's absolutely rampancy 20 years ago.

Amazing as an entry-level JRPG, and feels very different from most standard JRPGs. You'll likely find a pokemon design that appeals to you in any game, and only a few of them are hard to find without a guide. Unless you're doing a nuzlocke, these games aren't hard and any team configuration can carry you to the end of the game. It's a very fun series. Even if the mainline games don;t hold your interest, the spinoffs definitely will.

the concept of leveling up 6 select monsters just so they could get stronger and beat the bad guys.

the multiplayer (which requires having friends) is supposed to be the good part but some of the game have good/decent single player. this results in those games being considered the best by most of this board. hgss, b2w2. also some spinoffs like pmd blue rescue team, explorers of sky, super, and the ranger games. maybe colosseum and gale of darkness but I haven't played those so I'm not sure, but people here praise them and I doubt they had a lot of multiplayer features
