Why do quick alternating colors cause seizures? Is it because the brain can't process the rapid changes fast enough? Does that mean it's making you literally think too hard? Does that imply thinking can literally kill you?

Its only a scene that was meant to last a few seconds that nobody would have really cared about. The flashing effect was very cheap and easy to do for tiny scenes like that in anime.

A lot of processes in the brain happen at about the same frequency as some of those signals, so occasionally there'll be glitches.

Are those not fully developed in kids, which is why only kids got seizures from the show? Even if its a kids show it still aired during primetime and those shows in Japan were typically watched by the whole family together, not just the kids.

Probably, Japan wouldnt have let that slide. Everything would have been cancelled right there and Pokemon would have never made it to the west. Pokemon wouldve been known as some obscure mid 90s Japanese only franchise. Just the first game, the short lived anime and cards wouldve been the entire franchise.

In some alternate dimension this happened and our lives as a result would have been so different.

Like >>38534528 says, this sort of thing should typically only happen to epileptics.
The kids who got his really bad probably had undiagnosed epilepsy, while everyone else just had nausea or something from watching too close to the screen.
There are some reports that the whole ordeal was exaggerated to some extent.

interesting you say this, since I saw the news report about the incident as a kid and they showed a completely unrelated clip from the episode with erika's gym of ash crossdressing, then being shocked by pikachu and his disguise falling off but from my perspective I thought pikachu shocked a girl and she turned into a boy and it looked like the weirdest fucking shit to me and it was obvious they chose that on purpose to freak people out. I've heard things about the news finding urotsukidoji which has tentacle rape in it and their being a minor freak out about oriental cartoons kind of like dungeons and dragons in the 80s. interesting to think about how unacceptable things like that were not long ago, now we have niggas walking around in full ahegao outfits.

I remember that, America had no idea what anime was and was afraid of it. The publics perception of animation was that it was solely for kids (but it was slowly fading thanks to adult cartoons like the Simpsons and pretty much gone a decade later). It was exacerbated by the fact that it aired in the evening quite close to the shortest day of the year, so a lot of kids were probably sitting in dark rooms (because some people don't turn to the light on when they watch TV apparently), making the flashing that much more of a powerful than it might otherwise have been, that's why now every cartoon has a message about watching it in a well-lit room.
