Alright bros, Red pill me on the what's what in Pokemon. Haven't played the games or followed much of the anime since Fire Red, but the movie rekindled my interest in the series. Whats the essentials list to get caught up?

they're all pretty good, start with Platinum if you wanna just pick up where you left off, gen 4 is pretty good, gen 5 is probably the mechanical peak, and gen 6 & 7 are fairly "casualized" but the modern technology and QoL improvements are nice.

Play Emerald and/or Platinum. If you aren't feeling either of those Pokemon isn't for you!

If you want to catch up with the anime, just know to skip Black/White because the production values were awful. The two latest series have been very good, and the latest reset all continuity so it's good to pick up cold.

Or just watch all the movies if you want the most concentrated dose of decades of pokemon in the shortest time possible.

Also, is it just me, or have the designs gotten worse? Like, they're not *bad*, but many of them don't really stick like gen 1-3.

Sure the mechanics are improved over gen 2 and eventually the physical and special split comes, but the only new game I have enjoyed is BW1/2. HGSS are my favorite.

And that is a complement as it surpassed many people's expectations, despite many initially thinking it was gonna be Stadium 3.
PBR flat out wanted to be a Stadium game and it still failed on that front despite Colosseum and Gale raising the bar so high.

You're definitely going to need to play the Platinum-BW2 stretch. As much as people can and will screech you should honestly play at the very least one game from Gen 6. Not as a recommendation but because I'm tired as hell of people parroting the exact same one-dimensional opinions and if you play it you could form an actual opinion. Gen 7 is horrifying in terms of cutscenes so I mean you can play one of those as well, but again the only reason I'd ever tell someone like you to play one is so you form your own opinion. If the cutscenes piss you off do not hesitate to drop out then and there. Also despite what I just said Gen 6 and 7 are not worth it if you have to get them full price, but it's not hard to hack a 3DS anymore so whatever.

I think worse in terms of what you're not accustomed to if you grew up playing in that era. There are some good designs which come from later gens but I mostly agree, the later designs dont really appeal to me either. After a certain point I grew numb to designs though and decided to focus on what each pokemon can bring to the table regarding battles

If I'm being genuinely honest? No, I'm not.
But in the case of PBR, those sure as fuck would've helped it out a lot.

Play HGSS if you haven’t played HGC, Platinum, BW 1 and 2 (pick the same version color for narrative cohesion), XY, watch a playthrough of ORAS if you never played RSE, and play watch a playthrough of USUM if you don’t feel lile snagging it yourself.

Because bw2 is a sequel it is for the best to play a spin-off like pokemon conquest so you do not get too tired from playing through the same region. While there are a lot of changes, there are a few parts that feel similiar to the original bw.

Bw itself is a soft reboot and it works great as a way of reintroducing the thrill of discovery for older fans. Reason being its only gen 5 main game pokedex, making it feel like a modern kanto with its 150+ pokemon.
