Usually when a major movie doubles its billed budget is when it *really* breaks even, since it has to account for marketing, fast food promotions, etc., but it does continue to make money off merch (I mean, just look at PokemonCenter.com right now), physical media, digital download, the inevitable sale to Netflix, Amazon, etc., and so on.

Ultimately this. Seeing as most of the recent blockbusters are aimed at more adult audiences, this movie (while having nostalgia elements) is primarily aimed at kids and families.
Took my nieces to see it, and now they want to see the other movies too, and get cards, so even if this doesn't hit Marvel numbers, the merchandising should help it become profitable.

Objectively speaking, 58 million OW for US is fucking pathetic. I don't care if Endgame cannibalized DP's numbers. Pokemon could have been another fucking Jurassic World to Incredibles 2 situation. It wasn't. It failed. It flopped. When Disney buys out Pokemon, then we'll get good box office numbers.
