It's still kind of rough even with the circle pad.
The way you have to keep holding a direction to keep from drifting to the center makes it hard to properly navigate with any precision, especially because it's hard to gauge where everything is in relation to you.
The one time the 3D effect would actually improve the gameplay and Game Freak keeps it off.
