i think the reality, which has been clear for the past couple of generations, is that gamefreak is not equipped to produce the high caliber 3d games they are moving towards. they don't have enough staff and they don't have enough experienced staff who can pull off this sort of thing. instead of expanding and revamping their production style they are sticking to their original methods and the result is lackluster offerings that take forever to produce.

New game trailers will get the most attention if released shortly after detective pikachu, so this is a possible timing.

They could be trying a new marketing philosophy. I, as well as many, thought how much we knew about Gen 7 before its release killed a lot of the fun of playing it for the first time. Given the rather young & impatient nature of the community though, I'm not exactly sure this approach is much appreciated, unfortunately.
