so at what point are you supposed to go south?

after you get surf, do you go south and explore, or do you just go and try to beat winona?

I usually do the abandoned ship during the regi quest because I always forget to backtrack once I get surf.

I love that you can either go straight to slateport city by going down that river above oldale town, or you can go the same way you went by boat and explore new areas

Probably as soon as you get Surf. The game takes you past the Abandoned Ship to show you that there's something there and make you curious to investigate it. Then you get there, realise you need a new HM (Dive) and have to come back later.
