I haven't seen the movie yet (still not out till tomorrow in NZ) but I think they confirmed a Pokemon Cinematic Universe was happening with there being movies based on Red/Blue and that since Detective Pikachu got so much love at the test screenings, it was greenlit for a sequel.
At least that's what I remember reading somewhere.
