I don't think it's saying that humans are literally a type of Pokémon, but that humans and Pokémon were considered the same. Like, they were thought of as the same thing, socially.

That's the route the English version takes.

But the guy who's job it is to interface from the Japanese team to the western public and answer lore questions references it the Japanese way where humans are Pokemon and married them in the ancient past, so I think its ambiguous enough that instead of a canon answer you can just go by whatever version you prefer personally.

What if humans can evolve, but slavery never existed in their universe so no humans have ever been traded? Or they need to be traded with a specific thing, and no human has ever been traded holding it because its an odd thing to make a slave hold?
What if Nuggets are the human trade evolution item, which is why humans love gold so much that it can just be found on the ground pretty much anywhere?

If trading is interdimensional travel, and trading with an item merges them like The Fly, could you argue any scientific alteration of the body is evolution? Like prosthetic limbs?

I suppose there is a difference between going to a hospital to get a gun-arm and, eg. Metal Coat-requiring Pokemon, having unexplained forces break down, cause selective metamorphosis, and be applied as a surface element to the body. Then again, you also have the Porygon line which, already being man-made, also evolves using trade and man-made items (Up-Grade/Dubious Disk) grow on trees. It seems that, like Stones, it has to involve the energy wavelengths that are generated during/cause evolution, whatever it might be, otherwise it's just some regular prosthetics use (to be fair, Genesect is a pretty powerful example of what happens when you cyborg-up a Pokemon).

Well, since Pokemon has combined cartoony and realistic physics, some people theorize that humans being Pokemon in that universe makes sense. They can take more physical punishment than we can without injury, have a higher strength and endurance threshold, as well as both psychic and “magic” powers.

Plus, Detective Pikachu shows humans and Pokemon have empathetic meme (in the original meaning of the word) connections.
