Normies will like it alot because it's easy, looks like GO, and plays into their nostalgia. Also eases their youngest kids into the franchise. Replayability in spades for exploration-minded folks. Good for 10-minute sessions anywhere, and unlike a 3DS or DS, the system can serve as an anchor for family play. It's the most social Pokémon game outside of GO this franchise has ever spat out, and it at least earns points for that.
Longtime fans who don't go crazy over stuff like /vp/ does may often find LGPE disappointingly easy and too different for their tastes. Also too expensive, maybe. No replayability. Note that I actually know several longtime fans who really enjoyed the direction LGPE took. I gave it a 5 because your mileage really may vary.
Zealous Karenfags: stay away. Apart from minor QOLs, it's the retarded bulimic basedboy brother of the franchise. No Nuzlockes. No wedlockes. No randomizers. Little possibility of ROMhacks. Handholding out the wazoo. FRLG somehow manages to be a less restrictive game and more respectful as a remake despite being a decade+ older. If you're fine with Kanto springing to life as it was in RBY, not as something of a fully-fledged society, then you may find it more tolerable than most.
Smogfags: Your move GF. The game itself matters much less than the precedent it sets. Story and gameplay can be weighed less here. Depending on how GF chooses to implement the new TM moves, GO Transfers, rigging Natures for wild encounters, and how online connections work, the transition from LGPE to Sword/Shield could mean the difference between developing an NBA All-Star from a late 2nd Round draft pick, and a later lottery pick who never makes an NBA roster.
