It made sense when Kanto/Johto were neighbors, when not!Kyushu became Hoenn and when not!Hokkaido was made into Sinnoh and Almia.
But even then, GameFreak likes to pretend if two regions arne't shown to be near each other, theyre probably not. Somehow Hoenn and Kalos lay a swimmable body of water apart, and Kanto and Alola are MUCH MUCH MUCH closer together. (your mom implies Lillie can come visit from time to time, but the two locales irl are 17 hours apart by plane. But Lillie took a fucking boat. She wouldve been on that boat for literal DAYS at real-world distance/locations.)
