Bulbasaur was baby easy mode in Gen 1, it was Charmander that was hard mode (especially red version against misty)

Squirtle is more versatile but bulbasaur is just easier to use when you're just phoning it in

It'd be interesting to see a game where the Starters had BSTs < 500 that way they can't just carry your entire team since they'll more than likely either be a bit underwhelming in all stats or horrible in three particular stats.
