How is the Pokémon world organized geographically?

Was reading the manga and in Hoenn someone refers to “this country” in reference to Kanto, Johto, and Hoenn collectively. This made me start thinking about this.

Are they countries? Provinces? Does their system of government differ too much from our own to be compared?

It's the real world. At least for the most part. Unova isn't exactly New York/Manhattan for instance. But generally everything matches up pretty perfectly or well enough.

Seeing as the first four regions are almost geographically identical to various regions of Japan (Kanto is Kantō, Johto is the southern portion of Chūbu, Hoenn is Kyūshū rotated 90°, and Sinnoh is Hokkaidō), and the rest takes heavy inspiration from real world locale while still being somewhat distinct, I’d say that the Japanese archipelago at least is pretty much the same.

Kalos, Galar, and Orre (side game) are all geographically pretty spot on as well. Unova is a bit of a stretch however.

National refers to the Japanese nation. Japanese culture is massively superior to the French and American cultures which are completely dominated by Japanese, and also the Pokedex was developed in Japan, so the Unova and Kalos pokedexes still use "National" even though it's outside Japan.

the distance between hawaii and japan is referenced in alola
surge is the "lightning american"

their culture just puts more emphasis on region than countries, like the US with their states and state laws

Well not entirely, isn't it implied that Unova and Sinnoh are connected? Or was that because of Giratina portal magic? Also our states are basically separated countries united under an Empire realistically.

nah i'm pretty sure they aren't, there's a map someone did that showed a single landmass that had all 4 japanese regions on it and in their respective placements relative to the real place they were based on in japan

Meant in-game, pretty sure they say something connects to Sinnoh when it shouldn't through a mountain tunnel. Maybe it's Johto and I'm remember wrong.

But I do agree, it's clearly our world.

You're thinking of the Cave of Being where Sinnoh and Unova connect. Sinnoh also connects to Alola via the Couriway Train (which makes zero sense whatsoever).

In Unova’s defense, it’s only made in that shape because some kids got lost in Sinnoh. If Game Freak didn’t decide to accommodate for them, it’d probably be more accurate.

Gen 4 is honestly my favorite Gen, I love Plat, but Sinnoh is a mess of navigation and backtracking. I can definitely understand how kids (especially how every kid seems to have adhd anymore) could get lost.

It ALMOST makes sense. Fiore, a region based partly off an island that also happens to include the south-east corner of Johto, is apparently closer to Sinnoh than any other region.
I mean, in terms of climate, it’s absolute nonsense, but it tells me that Sinnoh and Johto are much closer in this world than in real life. Or that the legendaries are screwing with us.

Which, by the way, confirms that Sinnoh is to the north of Kanto and Johto.

I didn't say it wasn't easy, I said it was a mess of navigation and backtracking, which it is. I can see how children can get lost within Sinnoh. Just because something is easy doesn't mean it's not poorly designed in terms of how progression works, I appreciate that it's far less linear which is what Pokemon needs, but it's still a mess for children which is the primary audience.

Also in the Gen 1 games there are journals that say that Guyana, South America exists in the Pokemon universe. In Sun and Moon there is a globe that has Earth that is based on ours. Pokemon's Earth is similar if not exact to ours

that map is terrible, even if you take into account that the pokemon world is geographically analogous to earth, none of the layout makes sense, hot, arid Orre is way up in the north? Sinnoh is in the far south yet its northern portion is closer to the equator? Also the concentric circles of blue seem to imply that this is a globe, which would put kanto and johto on the fucking north pole.

I'm pretty sure in the Gen I days it was supposed to be (a version of) our world, Kanto being an actual region of Japan and all (alongside references like "the Lightning American" and the moon landing being in 1969).

Maybe they're revisiting that idea with the globe in SM?

Or more likely, they're lazy and/or haven't really thought about it

Canon answer here:
Regions 1-6 are part from the same country that's why they have the same National Dex.
Alola is the first region of a new nation.
