Meltan is a fantastic design and anyone who seriously thought they would design and model an all-new Pokémon to use as a placeholder (for what, exactly?) instead of using any existing model as they currently do is clueless, deranged, and has bad taste.

I can see where some thought it was a placeholder because Meltan's look kind of resembles an office assistant-like character. The nut could've been a reference to how "settings" icons are usually gears or a wrench.

Also this, gold beta release wasn't too long after Meltan leaked so people thought maybe Gen 8 would explore Gen 2 beta ideas.
