Pokemon Reborn is a fangame with notoriety for its edgy story, unfun bullshit difficulty and godawful writing. Previously I'd had a better opinion of the game, but playing this again now that the novelty value has worn off has really exposed it for the shitshow it is.

To make matters worse, Reborn has history as a RP group over pokebattle simulators, and the events of a fuckload of characters happen to be based off things that happened IRL. This suicide here? It actually happened. This guy's player killed himself, and his online friends decided to immortalize him in this game.

So, welcome to Route 1, accessible after at least 10 or so hours of gameplay. It’s a fuckhuge route that spans the length of about Hoenn’s landmass in terms of tiles, full of nature. A nice break from the shithole city. Tauros and Bouffalant can be found fighting, fighting one will lead to the other helping you. Bouffalant will charge forward in whatever direction they were facing and move fallen logs, Tauros can be ridden to jump up ledges. Also Miltank about that can be fed Oran Berries for milk.

The route is also flanked by fully optional, fuckhuge forests both north and south that take fucking hours of navigation and obstacle clearing for rewards that aren’t really worth it. Going inside, you see this redhaired lady having some dealings with a Team Meteor, and she tells us to fuck off.

On one end is a research and breeding center trying to figure out how the fuck to fix up the city. On the other, the way through to the towns we need to deliver the little girl jewelry to is blocked, guards permanently asleep. We have to find another way.

And below a sign in which our le epic mean rival wannabe Fern has scrawled, a maze. This maze leads to a castle which… of course it’s a fucking gym.

7th street seems to be some secret underground locale with services including nature rerolls. Services here will cost heart scales or shards, apparently because they’re used to make drugs.

I double back for the magikarp sidequest. You need to chase people all around the city for the Magikarp you buy at the fucking beginning of the game, and it ends up here, only to get it fucking snatched from you. I understand restricting Gyarados early game, but at level fucking 50 this is just retarded, especially when at this point it won’t be available until MUCH later on.

Apparently, buying all the stolen Pokemon here is required to eventually get a Mega Z-ring. Also if I didn’t know I had to find this literal who later I wouldn’t fucking remember him at all, but he gives a lucky egg for buying everything.

Lots of sidequests because looking for this fucko requires talking to specific NPCs one after another. Earlier in the game he’s met as the son of Serra, the unfortunate ice leader, and Luna went to live with them too. After Luna left, this guy sold out her location to the evil cultist man in exchange for an E4 position. Evil cultist man being an E4 explains why he has sway over them, it seems.

Digression for sidequests. A new building on 7th street opens so you can find praise le helix xD worshippers, I’m not sure what they give. Remember the forests I mentioned flanking route 1? Honey can be slathered on these big trees, and presumably about 255 or so steps later Pinsir and Heracross will fight over it. Fight one and the other will clear an obstacle, webs for Heracross and logs for Pinsir. Despite being wild pokemon, they refuse to be caught, resulting in nice scenarios as seen in this shiny Pinsir being uncatcheable.

The PC system guy can be found in the north section, who in exchange for a real fucking rare items you can only get out of ice cream vending machines by luck will offer you a megastone not usable for very, VERY long. North section also has an entrance into the same ice mountain you can go into from several areas, in a nice bit of world interconnectivity. At the end of the north section is a.. pond with Dewpiders, and another megastone. I’m not supposed to be surfing yet, it’s hacked in because I wanted to find out what the fuck I spent over an hour on this for.

The puzzle is tedious as fuck, because you need to reach areas by riding Tauros, dismount those Tauros since they can’t go into ultratall grass to find trees to slather honey on to summon bugs, then have those bugs clear obstacles so you can fucking do the same thing over and over and over again. At the very end of it, you see a Pinsir and Heracross fighting over nothing, and whichever one you fight will have the other join you. A great reward if the puzzle was half as fucking long, supremely underwhelming like this.

So Luna's bullshit field is the dark crystal cavern. Instead of, say, the darkness enabling better sneak attacks to explain why dark moves are powered up, it has to come from the ""energy"" of the place.

I have never used the word cringeworthy before in this playthrough. I've been saving it for this moment. Luna might actually be insane after all, because she believe her dark type to be associated with literal lack of light, an gives a speech that belongs on an emo tumblr or something.

Al her Pokemon are named after Alice in wonderland associating things. Wow, very very original. Moth and Scrafty tear through her.

In the circus is a NPC that apparently fixes some bug about about the player's preferred pronouns. I found it a little funny how high up their priority list it seems. Otherwise the circus acts as a game hub, providing tons of services such as relearner, some tutors and what not, sicne we can't return to the city for a while.

Anyway, we need to find where this Terra sent Aya and Hardy flying. Aya seems to have been taken into the main tent of this circus, and to do that with meet with the local ringmaster and two of the circus performers: Strongman Samson and acrobat Ciel.

Cain and Aya have a happy sibling reunion. As it turns out, Samson, Ciel and... Terra are all gym leaders. Fighting, flying and ground. Samson gets to be gym leader because 'Hero of Reborn' Cal got 'Kiddie fiddler enabler'' Kiki killed.

Hardy seem to have been sent flying further. To find him we must cross route 2. The caves contain Crustle that have to be put to sleep with sleep powders collectable from trees, then pushed into position to act as platforms to jump around on. It's a fuckhuge route, but not as fuckhuge as route 1.

The end of Route 2 leads to the Celestinine Cascade, the waterfall sourced from the mountain that feeds into the city's lake.

Some of you might find this scene familliar.

The game is marketing itself on being rundown and gritty. Cleaning up Reborn City does ostensibly reduce some edginess, but the player doesn't really participate that much in the cleanup, and the plot is still pretty stupid. Yes and No. You used to be able to get it early, but the Dev was pissed that it trivialized their game, so then they punted it to the very end of the game. They do this for all other good mons, like Vulpix, shunt them off to the end portions of the game. The Dev doesn't like it when people beat the game "their way" and so they remove Pokemon.

Hardy, being a decent dude but also rather dumb, can't see it that way and asks if Saphira would do the same if it was one of her sisters. Stone-cold, she says yes. Charlotte overhears this and gets upset enough to fucking steal the jewelry from us to hand over to the fuck Meteors.

This turns out to have been a ruse. Her previous decisions also involved refusing to negotiate with evil terrorists. This buys us time for a gym fight, but Laura is still missing. Hmm.

Charlotte has one of the most bullshit fields out there. It starts out as 'superheated' and she will spam Eruption and Lava plume to get it to turn into a full-out burning field that boosts her fire STAB even more while halving water attacks. Very fair and balanced. On the flipside, the fire boosts are strong enough that fire attacks can be effective against her. Ame encourages us to use fire to trigger her PTSD of burning down her house and killing her parents, goddamn.

Perhaps proving Dr Electrorape right, Charlotte says that she loves fire and that burning down her parents house was an amazing experience. It's too late to bring everyone back, though.

I tried using a quick claw Walrein to use blizzard and just purge the superheated field, but her very fast typhlosion will immediately Eruption. I manage to deal with it with Flygon spamming slidequake. It's a fucking close one.

So some comments in the last thread brought my attention to Empyrean, so I decided to subject myself to it and...it's not as offensively awful as expected? The balance is fucked though. One of my Pokemon is a literal ceiling fan with three types ("Light"/Electric/Flying) with an ability that "negates all moves of 70 Power or less" (so all non-damaging moves). Another is this Psychic/Dark "Dream Hypno" that is catchable after a boss fight with it...but it retains the passive effects it had as a boss, so it's immune to Normal and all non-damaging moves. Oh, and I found a held item that also gives it full immunity to Bug-type attacks.

Still, I think I'm actually enjoying it? I think it has enough going on that I'm willing to let some of the more egregious shit slide.

This was actually a pretty shocking twist the first time I played, I didn't expect the LMAO SO WACKY RANDUM XD character to be an actual villain. Turns out she may have been pretending to be retarded the whole time.

Inside the computer is one of the more intereting areas of the game, the Genwun world. A special field is present that sort of reverts the game to gen 1 mechanics. Dark, Fairy and Steel types are converted to normal, being faster raises your crit rate, psychic attacks get a small power boost, psychics are immune to ghost, phys/special split is undone. Most notably, special attack and defense are fused, only the higher stat is used for both. This, however, doesn't take into account stat boosts, so you can't raise your SpDef and have it overtake your spatk and use it to attack. This also means that if your spatk is lower, you can spam moves like Draco Meteor and your attack won't actually go down. Surely this won't be exploited, right?

Some areas mimic gen 1 kanto while others are gen 1 versions of the game's areas. Also, le helix references. An interesting entry in the Cinnabar Mansion area apparently points to the infant Arceus as playing some role in Terra's transformation.

Of course, it ends in the Indigo Plateau Lance room.

Without contrary Serperior like in my old file, this turns out to be a real fucking bullshit fight. This is partly due the introduction of Seeds. In Gen 7 Seed items like psychic seeds would give bonuses once the relevant terrain comes into play, here they are expanded into four seeds that each act differently with multiple fields. Telluric, Magical, Elemental and Synthetic.

Terra sticks Synthetic seeds onto her Quagsire and Sandyghast, which in this glitch field turns them into ??? types with no weaknesses while boosting defenses. They would have been fucking impossible to break through were it not for the AI becoming so pissed off with my Venusaur sleep+leech seed that it switched both of them out and removed the bonuses. the Quagsire is also unaware, meaning you can't set up beforehand to kill everything. Phys/spec unsplitting also fucks up many mons. Also, the Garchomp gets to spam Draco Meteor for free because of the aforementioned effects.

With Waterfall on our side, we can go down and rescue the dykes in distress. The waterfall goes all the way to a water treatment plant underneath the city. On the way down, we see Victoria. God damn it.

All the detours made us take a while to reach. Let's recap what we've done. Crossed part of the mountain to travel to one city, a gym fight, climbed further up to reach another town, dealt with stuff there, climbed back down to deal with Terra. Assuming a few hours travel time between towns, this is maybe three or so days. At least Titania isn't starving and she has fresh water.

Despite going out of our way to rescue her and her notlover, Titania insults us. What a nice person. The dead bodies of some Meteors she's had her way with are also lying around, but it's understandable if she had to fuck them up for self-defense.

When confronted with new grunts, she.. wields her Aegislash like a sword and shield.

For SOME reason leaders of the league can be beholden to other places of employment, like this circus. How the fuck is this allowed? And considering how much business I apparently bring in, why shouldn't the ringmaster just sponsor me?

Anyway, Skydancer Ciel, and for once the bullshit field works out in my favour. Dragon dance gets boosted to double power, so 1 DD gets me +2ATK/+2SPD. Flygon rips through over half her team and the rest are slowly dismantled.

This is the first mega we see in-game, and it loses its flying type, despite this being a flying fight. Well done.

We end here, since I haven't played much after this point and there is a FUCKload of content I have to parse.

The route split is an idea that, with competent writing, would have been interesting. So the idea is that Taka and Titania both willingly trap themselves in an unhealthy role they don't want to be in because they feel like its their duty. So the Zekrom route is about them breaking free from this while Reshiram returns to the status quo. Of course, Ame being Ame, this gets up by the whole Lin thing and Amaria being revealed to be a completely awful person.

Beldum's sidequest is legitimately insane and I kinda love it. It's the Pokemon version of Thracia 776.
For the uniformed: First, fly to the Wasteland Hideout (Aya's Gym) and put a data chip in the healing machine, then heal there. Then go to Route 1 and get on a Tauros, then faint. You'll spawn in the Wasteland Hideout riding a Tauros. Use this Tauors to go up a ledge near Squirtle's sidequest area and you'll find a new cave with Beldum.
