Pokémon Crystal Clear is pretty good. TL;DR it's an open world rom hack for Crystal. Has a bunch of starters and let's you choose your starting region. It's not a true open world but a lot of things it does is pretty good

Brown was decent, Orange seems promising but I haven't tried it, and I think it was Red Satin that has some decent dialogue, but that was a "Play as Green in Red" hack so not exactly original.
