In what? GS? Chikorita is mediocre in all aspects, but Cyndaquil is useful for blitzing the first two gyms. It’s really outdone by Magmar in GS though. Totodile is useful for blitzing gyms and can tackle everything in the game, but also has the advantage of being obtained far earlier than Gyarados while simultaneously not being as annoying to grind. You can also turn it into an HM slave.

If you're playing GS then none of those are even possible before Kanto. If you're playing Crystal/HGSS you have to rely on Pokegear RNG.

Fire/Leaf stone are hard to get in the GSC/HGSS since you have to get a lucky calll,wait till post game,or do really well on mini-games and wait. The totodile line has better movepool but still lower stats so that id up to debate

no, i want to not have an easy mode run on an already easy game, i'd take gatr over gyarados any day because i like gators, better yet, i'd make a monotype water run and use both, long story short, i like variety and i'll make multiple runs in a game with different pokémon
