I think the funnest part of playing pokemon is imagining yourself on an adventure throughout the world with your pokemon companions. This was the best up until B&W, where it was easy to self-immerse post plot. In all the new-gen games, there is SO much hand-holding that it doesn't feel like an adventure at all.
