I'll agree that most EX cards and other various Ultra Rare gimmick cards are actual failures in having functional card layouts but Gen 3 era cards were nothing but an improvement to basic card layout. There was so much wasted real-estate in early WOTC cards. Even if you're angry that they removed LV. and Pokedex entry flavortext one can argue that DP era did a great job at incorporating those without sacrificing too much in card layout.

Oh thank fuck, a thread for my autism. Been collecting cards since 1998 and I still have 90% of my original cards. I stopped collecting between Expedition and the EX era and started picking back up collecting towards the end of HGSS era. I still love collecting, some of the full art cards get pretty wacky, but I still prefer the aesthetic of the old cards. Japanese Neo cards are GOAT.

I can post pics of some of my personal favorites of the old sets if anyone wants.

The current print has a weakness and 1 for retreat cost. Sure, it hits harder but it's a different card.

Besides, when you limit a card to the format it belongs to, nothing was as broken as Sneasel. No other Pokemon received a ban hammer for being too powerful, not even NXD Mewtwo-EX.

That depends on what your opponents play. Ditto is versatile, but it can be knocked out mid-turn in certain situations. Chansey is a safer choice.

Out of these 2 options, maybe Rocket's Zapdos would be a good choice.

Base>jungle>fossil>base set 2>rocket>gym heroes>gym challenge>legendary collection>neo genesis>neodiscovery>neo revelation>neo destiny for the main "old school" sets. So you got the first and last. Some consider aquapolis and skybridge to also be among this group because they were the last 2 sets printed by wizards before the rights switched over to nintendo but they had different card layouts, but arguably some of the best artwork ever in the tcg. Old black star promos from this era were also good and very inexpensive.

Aquapolis is my favorite set.
I have the Crystal Kingdra from it (equivalent of a shiny Pokemon for that set) and two of my favorite card arts from it, Slowpoke and Drowzee.

I'm in the boat that all the card sets have merit, old or new. Old has that nostalgic feel with clean layouts (especially in Japanese cards) and classic art styles, while the new cards have a ton of great artists making cards. Full art cards are pretty fun, especially the ones with nice art instead of a static 3D render.

Basically, if you want that nostalgic "old soul" feel, keep between Base and maybe the E-series of cards.

The card art has plenty of soul. Hell, Aya Kusube, the artist of that Slowpoke, still draws for the TCG as recently as Crimson Invasion (a set headed by Ultra Beasts) and the art is still beautiful, like the Remoraid they drew.
The only thing that sucks is the layout of the cards themselves, feels a tad too smoothed out.

The autist in me can't resist pointing out that they actually stopped giving away Ancient Mew after the first week, and they went to handing out Legendary bird promos after that. But yeah, I also don't understand how people can miss the fact that massive amounts of all of these cards were distributed and therefore aren't worth much. I don't miss the old game, it had some serious balance issues. Energy Removal, The Rocket's Trap, Lass, Chaos Gym and Slowking were pure cancer.

But I agree we need something like Brock's Ninetales back in the game, it's probably the most interesting ability ever printed.

That would be very difficult. The good is in the vast majority compared to the bad. There's very few card artists I've seen people shit on, (mostly generic sugimori/ohmura ones, or 3D 5ban Graphics ones).

Beat Up reaches, on average, 80 damage. That's enough to ko a chansey in 2 turns, even if it had two metal energies.

Also, that chansey would need to be put into play via brock's ninetales + brock's protection, otherwise, Super Energy Removal is also a valid counter. That's a 5 card combo that would buy you a 2 turns wall.

I also only collect them for the art, I haven't ever played a real round of the game.
Arita's definitely worth sticking on the list, and Himeno drew Fossil 52 Omanyte, so them as well.

Atsuko Nishida is pretty great too but some of her early stuff is awkward to look at. Saito's pretty damn good.

pkmncards, though you're only going to get really good scans of the newer sets, lots of the old scans are blurry or some dingus forgot to clean the scanner/card itself so you can see bits of fuzz and lint in the scan. For japanese scans collectorviper still has a bunch of the sets up and those are really cleanly scanned. Sometimes Bulbapedia will have good scans but it's hit or miss.

Ah, thanks.
I wish the Pokemon company would upload more of these arts at full resolution, so many pieces of amazing art and at most all we get are a few ones uploaded for the sake of site promo images. I'd love to use the Shieldon or Misdreavus ones as wallpaper or even print them for use as posters.
