Why join a team? Just beat up a bunch of crappy Pokémon in the starter area and then roll through the gyms with your overleveled Pokémon.

Just make sure to pick a starter Pokémon that evolves strong and go ham.

Not everyone wants to be a Pokemon champion. Plus you've got to differentiate between game mechanics and how the world functions.
Presumably in the actual world it takes more than 3 hours to plow through everything with a single starter, otherwise the world just wouldn't function.
Joining a team could spice up an otherwise dull life bringing meaning or excitement. It could be a way to make money, or it could just be the the person in question is misguided (Aqua/Magma).

For the first few, maybe. But you have to keep in mind that in most instances, the grunts have a limited set or type of Pokemon, usually to prevent them from posing an actual threat to the higher-ups. That some of these are themed only makes the argument even more idiotic.

Cipher Peons are far better trained and have a far wider variety of Pokemon. Fight me.
