They all are pretty likeable, all have their own personality quirks and whatnot, all have had a pretty decent bit of backstory as well. It was probably a misstep to say that XY characters were the second best. I like Bonnie, Clemont, and XY Ash, but Serena is literally just a terrible amalgamation of every female lead so far with some shitty "Ash x <insert female lead here>" fanfic made reality. (also

As for the other series, need I even go on about BW, Iris is like passable but literally just Misty but black, Cilan is literally annoying, and Ash here is literally brain damaged. DP had probably some of the best written characters, especially really good rivals, but compared to Sun & Moon's, they had no real backstory, they also just reused Brock for the 3rd time and made Ash kinda worse. OS was probably the next best after XY, no real complaints but I just like some of the side characters in DP much better. And AG, again, of course I like May but it just feels a lot like, they wanted to keep having Misty around but the upper staff told them no, so they just made someone who's pretty similar to Misty. Dawn to me was handled much better. Then Ash was just really more of the same, I guess toward the Battle Frontier saga, Ash got a lot better, but AG was the origin of the "seasonal reset" for Ash, which sucks and I'm glad they don't do it anymore as of XY.
Anyways, at the risk of sounding even more retarded, I'm going to stop talking and post my personal series rankings based on characters and then the series themselves.
SM > DP > XY > OS > AG > BW
DP > SM > XY > AG > OS > BW
