People often credit the Ash/Paul rivalry as one of the best in the series because it was a clash of ideals. Ash and Paul could not possibly have been more different.

He was an extremely abusive trainer to Chimchar. The episode after Paul released it and Ash caught it Ash simply praised it even though it lost to Dawn's Piplup and it remembered the constant cruel treatment from Paul and broke into tears.

How would you do so a friendlier behavior gets more favored in the games? I've always felt that the games are absolutely hypocritical in the message they try to deploy as playing Eugenics Simulator 2019 and rejecting batches of dozens of Pokemon is the to-go method to enter the competitive scene.

Hilariously, this was something I kinda skirted around talking in another thread about open-world Pokemon games. I feel like GF on some level gets this, and that's why we get stuff like Pokeathlon, Contests, Pokemon-amie, etc. The games CONSTANTLY parade about how you're so caring and loving of your pokemon, but then the best it could muster for the longest time was a hokey point system based on... walking... and not using disgusting healing items... or not letting them faint, or other BS like that. I think they get that that wasn't enough, and are trying somehow or another to add in and embellish on non-combat aspects of gameplay, which to me IS somewhat welcoming, given half the ideal sold by the series is "travel the county/country with a cool friend and struggle together as pals".

Yeah GF puts a lot of work into trying to make it be anything but just making animals fight each other. The fact that battling is sort of just a common thing for Pokemon to do in the wild is meant to reinforce that humans aren't necessarily forcing them to do it against their will, and GF bolsters that by stuff like Pokemon Amie and all that shit. They're just bad at making it have actual gameplay effects. Although I'm one of those sentimental types who manages to feel touched when a Pokemon that's got high friendship with me has special messages pop-up in battle or survives a hit with 1 HP due to its loyalty to me. That shit gets me every time, man.

Though I agree that mechanically there needs to be stronger connections between non-combat interaction and combat, I feel like the thing you touched on in the spoiler block might honestly be just as powerful a tool for them, if not moreso, than mechanical effects. Sometimes the best way to make people care about something is the emotional appeal.

They had Paul use Ice beam and Blizzard on Weavile on one occasion they implied Swords Dance powered up the latter.

Paul is a cunt because, his nice brother was a quitter. He idolized his brother so, that fucked up his world view. So he decided being a cunt was the proper way to surpass his brother. Also his parents could have been abusive or dead.

This is true, but unlike against Ash, Brandon used all 3 Regis against Paul. When Ash beat Brandon, Brandon had opted to only use his newly caught Regice and 3 other normal mons. Ash had lost the first time to Brandon when it was just Registeel.
