I think it's supposed to be Kanto. During the development of Pokemon Gold and Silver, there initially wasn't enough space to place the actual entire region onto the same cartridge, but they were able to optimize heavily and squeeze it in.

Well it's not post-game, it was just going to be another town in the game. The original region was all of Japan.

I think it's amazing how incompetent they are that at the release of SM, they were just as bad at optimizing in the early 00s as they were in the 90s.
In all those years, they seemingly haven't hired a single employee that knew about optimizing.

no, the original plan was to have all of japan as the game world instead of one region/prefecture/whatever, but masuda had his way and we ended up with an iterative franchise where everything is structured identically to the first game

Were you people living in a barrel last summer? It's not about Game Freak making Johto and then squeezing only a tiny Kanto along with it before the code was condensed, the demo that was found had a completely different world map at that point in development. It was in a completely different scale than the final Kanto/Johto which is basically two small-ish areas of real world Japan, the idea at the time was clearly to make a Zelda II sort of deal of making Pokemon 2's map the entirety of Japan and have a miniature Kanto as one of the areas.

Not really. The whole region was different. It wasn't just "johto and kanto", it was a huge map based on the entirety of Japan

The Kanto map in the OP's pic was only 1 city in that region
