I'd also say that Pokemon's whole 'hey, you could be here catching Pokemon it's a magical world don't you wanna catch 'em all?' marketing angle really dug deep into people's subconscious, so when they're totally unsatisfied with the world around them it's one of the things that pops into their mind as a viable alternative.
