Didn't her actress retire from voice acting? They'd have to recast her, which is something Japan doesn't do unless it's absolutely necessary.

Her VA got a throat disease or something and doesn't do voice acting anymore. I heard she was doing some narrations a few years ago but nothing too strenuous like voicing high-pitched anime girls.

Not "retire", she got dysphonia which fucked up her voice.
It'd be pretty meaningless to bring back a character for nostalgia's sake when you have to recast her and kill all the nostalgia.

I remember the Japanese Kinnikuman fans throwing a shit fit when the new cartoon recast Kinnikuman (because it was a sequel and he was a very minor character). It was so bad that the sequel to the tie-in video game had to completely redo his dialog with the original voice actor.

Also keep in mind May's original cameo in 2008 was only 2 years after AG ended in 2006, so it was fairly recently and her VA could still play the character.

Also besides Misty/Brock, most other characters are allowed to be forgotten after they leave the show. Characters in the middle seasons like May, Dawn, etc. will never be given the same treatment as the original cast of Misty/Brock. Don't expect to see Dawn return when DP remakes happen either

I think the other problem is May is only really well known to the subset of fans who watched in the early 2000's. She hasn't been part of the show since 2006, which is 13 years ago. Millions of kids/teens now never watched her, and before anyone asks, most people don't go back and catch up on 1000 eps they missed. They probably just watch Kanto to see the start of the show and then whatever the current saga is.

There just wasn't much incentive for the writers to bring her back.
