Megas were a mistake. Every one of the designs look dumb, and they mostly serve to make fan-favourite, already-OP mons even more OP (or completely fail to fix weak mons).

Pokemon should never have tried to be Digimon.

leave that to digimons, they're doing it much better too

but sadly the games aren't there to be balanced or to have exceptional gameplay, but to sell, and overpowered mons, and megas, means marketing

as it stands it's a useless mega on a pokemon nobody likes
And if we go down the list of popular 'mons then with gen 5 we end up with archeops as the first not really good which wouldn't even have needed a minmax mega to be good, just +100 anywhere and early bird

Camerupt is Team Magma's and Maxie's signature Pokemon. It needed a Mega for the same reason that Sharpedo needed one. Also, Megas unlock a Pokemon's dormant power. A Pokemon with a dormant volcano on its back is a very appropriate choice for a Mega Evolution.
