None of the other Pokemon games wouldn't have existed if Gen 1 didn't exist. And for its time Gen 1 was a great game with a lot of fun and appealing features. There's a reason Pokemon caught on in the first place. It's not magically made not a good game just because later games improved upon it. Just calling it trash and discarding it because "it's old so it's bad" is just a stupid, childish mentality.

bonus points if they're the type of fans who complain about the state of nu-pokemon but still refuse to try anything different. mario fans don't get angry that sonic exists, zelda fans don't get angry that alundra or okami exist, but many pokemon fans get legitimately offended that digimon and yo-kai watch exist.
another annoyance is when people call any pokemon design they don't like a "digimon." the art styles aren't even remotely similar and plenty of digimon are well-designed.

let's be real now, it was aping. game freak was started by a bunch of dragon quest fanboys, the games are basically watered-down dragon quest v with pvp, and a fair amount of the kanto dex was ripped off from the dragon quest bestiary. it makes sense that their art director would be ripping off toriyama.

Sugimori's art was much more angular and much less detailed than Toriyama's ever was. Look at Toriyama's art and designs from any period and you'll see that he pays super close attention to detail whether he's drawing characters, monsters, machines etc.. The coloring styles between the two are not even remotely similar.
