If you compare it to 3-Angled Blue's comic or "Around Ghouls, don't be a fool", you can see the inspirations in the art, pacing, and tempo. Even the way Ruby talked was based on how people talk on /v/. Early nuzlocke comics, which drew from the original, therefore emulated the /v/ comics by proxy, which is why they tended to be a lot funnier and more soulful. But as time went by different art styles began to be used by different artists, and the pacing, tempo, and humor followed suit.
