Tried reading it since the translated chapters are on mangadex. It takes stereotypical shounen to the extreme with most bland and cookie cutter details to everything, whether plot or characters, and slaps terrible artwork on top of it. And of course, Pokemon is just an afterthought for it. 10/10 would axe again.

The author once mentioned he had been working on the story for years, so since it was heavily based on gen 5 mons, it's almost guaranteed that he originally intended it to just involve random monsters he had designed himself, but that nobody wanted to buy the concept until some clever marketing guy realized it might sell if they replaced the generic dragons and whatever with Pokemon.

tldr it's a shitty super generic battle shonen nobody wanted anything to do with until it was realized it'd sell if they slapped the Pokemon license on it.

Is it that easy to get a big brand name like Pokemon? I get this particular manga is inoffensive, boring at worst, but you'd think they don't want something straight out of a doujin to be associated to them.

I assume what happened is that TPC wanted a shonen manga and went to Shonen Sunday to have them come up with one, and they remembered they had a submitted concept for a manga about characters that use crystallized monsters to transform. So they just got ahold of that author and told him they'd publish his series if he replaced the generimonsters with Pokemon.
