I don’t think that Pokémon will ever “end” as in we won’t get any more games at all. However, I do believe that we will only get 12-13 generations in total with 15 being the maximum number of gens possible before GF stops releasing new regions. After that, Pokemon won’t go away, but there will be no new generations. The franchise will instead continue in the form of spinoff games, remakes, the anime, live-action movies, merchandise, etc. Pokemon has been popular for a long time. It’s not a coincidence that Game Freak is just now starting to look to develop different games and establish a Pokemon cinematic universe. They’re setting up ways for the Pokemon IP to make money forever without having to make new gens forever. We’re not going to get a Pokédex with over 5000 Pokémon.

Yes. I think that GF is going to continue to do what they did in Kalos and Alola by introducing only a small number of new Pokémon each new generation to prolong the franchise until they reach anywhere from 12-15 gens. They may even go to 20 if the number of new Pokémon per gen drops to around 50
