I can't understand why people hate Hugh's motivations so much. We've been shown time and time again, from multiple medias, that pokemon are more than just pets or tools for battle to the majority of people in the pokemon world. The fact is Hugh's Purrloin has sentimental value, due to it being his late grandfather's gift to his little sister. So to Hugh, that particular Purrloin isn't some replaceable shitmon but rather, a member of his family. People share this exact setiment with their pets all the time, so why is it bad when Hugh does it? It's no different from Ash's bond with Pikachu or any other main character and their pokemon from the anime. Not to mention Purrloin was takn by a criminals from a criminal organization, so Hugh's rage is justified.

If anything, that's really shows how genuine Hugh's feelings and motivations are, since it's all for what people would normally see as a average shitmon rather than a popular pokemon, like say Riolu or Charmander.

Because it kept being repeated over and over again throughout the game. It wasn't just a motivation, it was a constant conversation subject in nearly every interaction with him.

Hugh is not even worthy of being called "rival", if at least he was actually competitive and didn't give up against Team Plasma at the end then he would be way better. (also needs a better team)
