I'm not a genwunner, just so you know, actually my favorite gen is V, but this is true. Gen 1 mons were at the same time ambiguous and unlike anything in real life, but also felt natural, like something that could belong in nature. The art style largely helped that aspect, where the monsters had organic proportions. Now, everything is cartoonish and toy-material, it doesn't feel natural anymore.
This doesn't make the news designs bad. Even old pokémon changed over the years. I just wish the KANTOOOO art style and design logic could mix with the colorful, daring and smart designs of newer gens, in a nice balance. So we wouldn't have boring and bland mons (Pidgey is literally just a bird), but wouldn't have Kawaii uguu giant-headed cartoons
