Throw away moves Ash teaches to counter one specific opponent only works with Oakmons brought back for the leagues.

Assuming neutral natures on both and Swarm instead of Guts, Heracross needs to be level 82 to avoid a OKHO on a level 100 Darkrai. Even then it should leave it near death, while the anime Darkrai just shrugged it off.

Charizard is an auto-include because it’s a fast powerful tank but mostly by the virtue that it can fly bundled with that other shit. When Ash fought Gary, he teched so hard with zard that he flew up high enough so that Blastoise couldn’t even hit Charizard with projectiles and proceeded to nuke the field turning it to lava, forging Gary to douse the field so the steam could cloak Charizard long enough to get in close to Blastoise to get a Toss off. Charizard IRL, or any powerful, fast Pokémon that can FLY would be absolutely broke. The tech would be endless. Charizard is one of the auto-include BUSTED guys in IRL/anime OU.

It's not even game mechanics, it's basic as fuck logic. A powerful bug type move by a powerful bug type should do some decent damage to a dark type. And Ash used a decent strategy to for once. Those are the essences of pokemon battles that go beyond smogon's dumb calculator. The writers ruined it all just cause they wanted Ash to lose badly.

He did but it wasn't notable and Darkrai probably healed it off with Dream Eater (tho it wasnt states and anime moves work differently). Gible on the other hand was praised non stop by Tobias while Heracross was a mosquito.
