Terrible typing and stats. Shiftry was only relevant in gen 3 because it could be used on sunny day teams and gen 3 didn't have the split for physical and special attack. Ghost type moves where treated as physical attacks lol, so Shiftry used shadow ball well. Also it had a terrible moveset, it barely had any good grass/dark type moves to use.

Salamence instantly replaced Dragonite, and Metagross was fucking amazing. Milotic was a better Gyarados and even Flygon wasn't half bad either. Swampert was a monster just for its typing and Sceptile's speed and STAB leaf blade weren't that bad either. You couldn't see a rain team without Ludicolo, etc.

But because bad defense. Running one in Alola now after finding a wormhole shiny (better than nothing) and it's ok, but I can find so many mos that do what it does that don't die from 2-3 hits or get one shotted all the time. Attractive mon ruined by his stats

Yes, and that doesn't stop them from obviously being correlated. Before the split, Gyrados awesome movepool was wasted due to its lacking special attack, and it could barely made good use of its flying STAB, if at all, plus a 4x weakness to electric and it being weak to rock. Milotic was much better just for the fact it gets recover/refresh and marvel scale.
