Every single installation of Digimon was basically its own individual thing, with no consistency between any of them. So people watching the cartoon and playing a video game - or, hell, people watching the cartoon and then watching a new season - were introduced to something completely different from what they're familiar with. Hell, even people who started with the original Tamagotchi-toys found that that aspect ended to dropped, in exchange for games about digital computer worlds and TV shows about transforming human children.
There are some franchises which worked with that sort of thing, but they managed to maintain some sort of consistency between their appearances to tie it all together. You'd hardly call Mega Man X, Battle Network, and the Ruby Spears cartoon all similar, but they all involve a blue robot boy running around shooting stuff with an arm-blaster in a Saturday Morning cheesy plotline, so fans can end up enjoying all three despite that.
