The Contests and May's character were aimed at girls and to bring more females into watching pokemon. It made sense since her Contest arc was based on shoujo tropes and stories.

Fun Fact: Contestshipping is the most popular non-Ash ship in the anime, and probably the third most popular ship overall behind Amourshipping and Pokeshipping. Pearlshipping is probably somewhere around there too, but Contestshipping probably has a larger userbase since a lot of people just like Ash and Dawn as friends.

honestly Hoenn and Kalos are the only two moments I felt like Ash reached peak Chadness. The mentor role for May, his voice getting deeper puberty style and his sacrifices in the movies like Manaphy/Lucario are all an example of this. Not to mention his growth against Brandon, he really had to use his noggin to get that symbol.
In Kalos, the fact he has Serena drooling over him, has this Sasuke/Sakura moment with her in the snow, becomes a league finalists, almost risks his life, and has a badass battle against Flare are all an example of this
