2 reasons:
1. There were no contests in Unova for some reason, and they didn't want to have 2 trainers wanting badges going together
2. Unova was trying to be the new Kanto so much that even Ash's companions were both gym leaders in their game versions to replicate Misty and Brock from the first seasons

The problem with Iris trying to be Misty is that Ash would need to react to her for it to mean anything.
Their friendship had no chemistry in BW, misty was matured and sassy, whereas Ash was immature and hot headed.
Ash is too much of a yes man to be a realistic child, or human for that matter.

By the end of 2010 most people were getting tired of Contests and girly girls (if you don't remember this, look through old bulbagarden/serebii threads from 2010...people were dreading the idea of a third coordinator after May/Dawn), so Iris was something fresh. Even if Hilda wasn't a coordinator, she probably would have had a similar character arc....pretty much like Serena did (besides the crush).

That and there's no real optional goal for the girl to do in BW

But it was true. People have forgotten this but Iris was actually not poorly received when BW first started. People were looking forward to something different than a, "third female coordinator" (which we more or less kinda got with Serena after), because Iris seemed different. The hate for Iris didn't even truly flare up till she beat Ash in the first Don battle tournament and that was 30-40 eps into BW I think.

They should've just gone full ham with focusing on new things like the games and gutted out Satoshi and Co. and have new main characters. Hilda would have likely been a Dawn clone if she was in the anime. Not in the girly sense, but in terms of an outgoing personality and liking to battle. She would have jumped into action and wanted to battle constantly.

Has anyone noticed that female MCs in the anime only happen in regions where the other gender player character becomes a regular character in the main story?
May and Serena become rivals, and Dawn is the Professor’s assistant. Heck even Lyra has a role. Meanwhile, Hilda/Rosa are Battle Subway and Selene and Leaf/Green don’t appear at all
