Trainers knowing when you switch out more often.
Proper level scaling that are within 4 levels of your team with proper pacing (BW2 Challenge mode was actually quite good with this).
Decent coverage moves.
Practical hold items (ie. Sheer Force+Life Orb).
Double battles using efficient team builds and moves or being the main format.
The last one would probably work out the best at making the game more challenging or interesting to play, but they are not the standard mode in mainline games and double battles can be quite slow at times. Gale of Darkness did this, but doubles has gained a lot more nuance since then so it would be cool to see this type of game revisited.
