The mainline games are just a part of pokemon, and in the eyes of the general public, not even the most important one. Even during the detective pikachu opening people where just asking about shit like Ash, or the anime version of team rocket, or other anime related shit, but none ever mentions the games, or characters from the games, and honestly even during peak pokemania it was always like that, the anime always had higher priority in people's minds. And this why Kanto pandering is a thing, they are trying to sell on people's memories of the anime, not the games.
