Started a new nuzlocke with Pokemon Red Deluxe. Got pretty careless right away and had to power level my Nidoran after it was the only surviving member of the slaughter the diglett in Brocks gym gave me.

Tried to post but vp shut down from last night's bombshell (or lack thereof). Randomized Leafgreen kicked my starter's ass with an Arena Trap/Air Cutter Mantine from hell. Got a third unlikely catch with Machamp, and Brock got his Grimer and Linoone fucked over. Did I accidentally adjust the catch rate? I don't remember touching it but this seems pretty unlikely, even if each one took like eight balls.
Spriting is a great way to destress, even if I'm shit at it. Very zen.

So one of the core aspects of Nuzlockes is that you almost never know what Pokemon you're going to get, and a theme is that you're meant to tough it out with what you have.
So what is your opinion on "scripted" Pokemon encounters?
If the game is offering you Starters, should you pick one randomly? If you had a Pokemon with alternating evolutions, like Eevee, should the form you take be randomized? Or would you randomize what Pokemon you can buy at Celadon?
If you'd always pick the same Pokemon out of a bunch, if given the option, do you think that kind of choice shouldn't be available to you?

In single shot nuzlockes i do that, but thats the good part of autismlockes for me, since picking mons for retirement and to keep your options open in next games is another layer of strategy so yes, i pick the ones i want when given a choice because i might need the other choice in the next version/remake

Scripted encounters always felt like the oasis in the drought as far as Nuzlockes go for me. Gary's Lapras makes sure you can Surf if your Water-type game is nonexistent. Eevee lets you supplement a weird-ass team with an extra type anchor that'll probably die within two towns anyway. I can see arguments for and against un-scripting these encounters, but can't judge either way. Ruby took Victini, so it's not really breaking any rules.

When it comes to starters I try to not use the same starter twice in a row. I personally don't like buying gift mons but it's the same thing, try not to use the same gift mon again and again.

As for eevee, it is usually what fits your team, but in the new drayano hack, where you have the option or a random stone, I absolutely do that.

Just started a Yellow nuzlocke, it's pretty fun I thought i'd be just using pidgeys and rattatas but i actually got quite lucky with my catches and i've been using pokemon i've never played with. Sandshrew is cool.

I might be an idiot. Just before the dragon trial I put my alolan marowak out to fight a veteran's gengar. I thought "Oh yeah, he should tank the first hit and knock him out in one shot." Nope, shadow ball OHKO. He was pretty useless overall, but damn I hate losing something so late. I didn't get another fire type all game, so I'm really annoyed at myself.

It depends. With starters I tend to pick the one I've used least recently. I do use gifts sometimes but try not to always use them. Sometimes you use some weirder shit when you don't fill your team with gifts. But then in places like Kanto there's a lot of good mons locked to gifts.

I often skip the forced encounters like XY's PIdgey or SM's Pikipek though, besides the first run.

I've never been a big fan of Bidoof but honestly training Zubat is a pain, you got Ground/Rock coverage with Onix so Geodude can chill in the box as well and Psyduck can also be backup in case anything were to happen to your starter. I'd say you've got a good team on your hands, but this is your run and your choice.

Rock Tunnel is an asshole. I've never done Gen 1 and not lost someone in there. A few steps in and the curse continued. Humility was taken out by a Crit Hyper Fang Linoone. He was a true badass gone before his time. Caught an Altaria but she was Spider Web/Ancientpower combo'd while training. All I could do was watch.

Gardenia was a clean Staravia sweep.
Turns out Machop couldn't handle Skuntank as well as I thought thanks to Poison Gas weakening me (it's not Guts) so Wormadam had to clean up. The main reason I'm using Wormadam is actually for Fantina because I always lose to her. Also, I that's Hidden Power Grass.

Hitmonchan might be one of the worst mons to use in gen 1. Definitely the worst Fighting type. Has all of Fighting's problems with no good STAB and none of the bulk or power of the rest. Even Primeape gets more usable move variety.

Didn't get a single catch in all the areas between Eterna and Hearthome. The only non-dupe was a Geodude that exploded in my face.

On the bright side, I already have a solid team so I can't complain. Budew also finally evolved. I'm thinking of taking on Fantina with Wormadam and Staravia, possibly with Pachirisu as backup.

We did it. I love Wormadam so much. I actually barely beat Gardenia once with Burmy thanks to potionspam but we don't have to talk about that. Confuse Ray was extremely annoying and I tried switching between Staravia to reset it but Confuse Ray has enough PP that it's just not worth it.

It's all uphill from here. Thinking of replacing Pachirisu because it's extremely weak but it works as a Electric/Flying resist.

should be fine, the highest level pokemon are 25 and your Onix can probably sweet the place out, bring potions and antidotes

If you train and evolve your Zubat into Crobat it will sweet the fighting gym no problem, Gyrados will do the same

You should also bring your Eevee along and start giving it haircuts so it will evolve into Umbreon/Espeon

I have a question, /nuzgen/.

I'm currently playing a monotype Nuzlocke with extra rules:
1. No items may be purchased from Marts (the vending machines on top of the Celadon Department Store are exempt from this, as the cool drinks are required to progress)
2. Anything that can learn a HM move, must learn said move ASAP, even if there are other Pokémon in the party who already knows it (Beedrill must learn Cut, Nidoking must learn both Surf and Strength)
3. Each Pokémon Center may be used only once. I will most likely remove this rule once I find it too difficult to proceed.

The question is of the remaining moveslots, more specifically TM distribution. The current party is as follows:
Cleric (lv. 20 Ivysaur, Tackle/Growl/Leech Seed/Vine Whip)
Fighter (lv. 19 Nidoking, Mega Punch/Water Gun/Horn Attack/Poison Sting)
Rogue (lv. 12 Beedrill, Poison Sting/String Shot/Fury Attack)
Wizard (lv. 12 Zubat, Leech Life/Supersonic)
Paladin (lv. 12 Oddish, Absorb)

The question remains, which TM moves do you think should go where, and which ones should be saved for future additions to the party? I am at the point in the game where I have just crossed Nugget Bridge, but not yet beaten Misty. As for future additions, Haunter and Tentacruel are very likely, Arbok and Venomoth quite possible, and cumulative 50% chance of either Weezing or Muk (though not both) if I ever reach Cinnabar.

Yes, the HM moves in question are only Cut, Surf and Strength. No Poison-type actually learns Fly or Flash in Gen 1, but those two are not strictly required to advance through the game, they only make it more convenient. Also, the only ones that learn multiple HM moves are Nidoking/Nidoqueen (Surf and Strength), and Tentacruel (Cut and Surf). Earthquake and Wrap seem to be obvious third moves for those, respectively, but the fourth move is a question mark.

94 attacking stats and what's apparently a high-tier HP Ground against Jupiter's Skuntank got me a lucky trivialization of that fight. HP vs Smokescreen turn 1, HP vs Night Slash turn 2 (took ~70% Mothim's health no crit), HP turn 3 means KO.
I had nothing else lmao, Onix (my original check) was poisoned by that fucking thing and is otherwise too passive to outlast Skuntank. I did however get a Rock Tomb in which allowed Mothim to guarantee a hit.

So Whitney with Bayleef and Geodude is a piece of piss. Even after Geodude got haxed a million times I still won without even healing besides an Oran Berry. Bayleef got a crit Razor Leaf and OHKOed Clefairy, then got both Reflect and two Poisonpowders (one to use the Lum Berry) off. Only Geodude got haxed and I even rolled Magnitude 4.

In my last run Clefairy used metronome and had bubblebeam which killed my onix off. Then I put Machop and that shit got psychic right after it. I lost the run because my only one left was Quilava, which wouldn't survive after attract first-round.

Honestly I would have started with Quilava to defeat Clefairy. Fire Blast at Goldenrod in HGSS is nice for that. Save Onix and Machop for Miltank.

Whitney's Gym Battle is the only important Johto fight that relies on RNG so heavily (hell, it's probably the only Gym Battle in the pre-3DS era that does): I wouldn't even cheapen any of the other victories by using Sand-Attack on Claire's Kingdra or something when other avenues are available. With that fucking Miltank, though, spamming cheap tricks is the only way to get around in the absence of fast special attackers who can take a Stomp. Doubly so in GSC as using things like Intimidate, Static, and Poison Point is impossible.

I did something similar this night, but I fell asleep and my gamephone ran out of battery. I progressed so little (only two and a half battles, I think) that I can just start over again from the save, and I don't really remember what I even did 100%.

Started an emerald run today. Almost lost everything to Brawly. Should have grinded more, but I felt confident. Sacrificed some underdeveloped team members to safely heal and switch. Set up with Saturn on Clefairy praying it didn't Metronome anything fucky, thankfully it got transform a few turns in. After that, he was tanky enough that Miltank barely did anything to him.

Back up plan was to Sleep Powder and then set up Venus.

Some people do the Pinwheel Clause, when a route is divided into different parts, with a different pool of pokemon, like Route 111 in Hoenn, or Pinwheel Forest in Unova.

For route 1, I'd probably do, The grass between your house and Iki town as one, the grass blocked by the Taurus Rocks as one, and the grass by Kukui's house as another.
