I always saw hilda and hilbert as the same person with the only differance being that one is a girl and the other a boy. And the cannonical starter for both would be oshawott so that bianca would get tepig and cheren would get snivy.

The only reason I believe this is because you dont meet the protag's counterpart in the beginning.

The opposite gender protagonist appears in the subway, Hilda is as canon as Hilbert and Rosa is as canon as Nate, and Hilda is most associated with Tepig like Rosa is associated with Snivy, that means Hilbert starter is Osshawott and Nate's is Tepig (Tepig is also Nate's starter in the animated trailers of B2W2)

Hilda and Nate can have whatever, but their starters don't impact anything for the other characters.
Hilbert's starter decides Bianca's and Cheren's, and Rosa's starter decides Hugh's.
