They're going to include different versions of characters with different costumes and partner Pokémon. Notice how Misty was the only Kanto trainer using her Let's Go design while the rest were based on HGSS. Except Red who got an entirely new outfit proving that even characters with only one outfit at the moment will still get new variants.

Just a heads up, Ohmori is only getting more projects with time, very likely to take Masuda's job when he retires. In fact he's the only man outside of Masuda and Tajiri to direct a full brand new generation. The canon is basically his, excuse shit away or not, that's the direction the series is going, that is the canon now.
