New mechanics aren't added to enhance gameplay anymore, it's just marketing. Give some shiny new toys to KANTOOO mons and then drop them for next gen because they don't sell games anymore.

That's been a thing in the last four pairs of games anon. XY gave you a gen 1 starter, ORAS gave you starters from gens 2, 4, and 5, and starters were in the wild via Island Scan in both gen 7 titles.

If you count Physical/Special split and Hidden Abilities as gimmicks, sure. Game Freak has never introduced a gimmick that fundamentally changed a Pokemon in such a cancerous way until Gen 6
