Do people still play this game? Still possible to update my cartridge to get all the cool legendaries?
If this game had internet access, it would have been the best pokemon game ever.

There's your problem. I'll let someone else dismantle the game for you, but the biggest problems are the unskippable cut-scenes (not as bad as Gen 7, but still bad), lack of content, and the ease of curb-stomping the game even more so than past games (Megas, free Lati@s, etc).

disregards some of the qol changes emerald had, basically no postgame other than catching legendaries, its biggest advantage is un-mythicaling deoxys honestly.

people don't like it because they cut the Battle Frontier, there's no other reason. ORAS has physical/special split, all the new Pokemon and mechanics, a story that makes way more sense than in the originals, QoL changes with breeding and EV training, and Gen 6/PSS compatibility, and much better graphics and music than RSE. Only reason to play RSE is for nostalgia.
