People give him shit, but Masuda loves Pokémon. Gen 5 taught him that he’s working with 2 groups of people: People who started with Kanto and don’t really like anything outside of their own nostalgia for the first 151 (ie: wild battles, battle frontier, battle subway, rotation battles, events for mythicals,) and People who are willing to try something new with Pokemon as long as it’s of quality and provides a solid experience. After Black and White, Masuda started to try to appeal to both sides at the same time—resulting in games that weren’t all there.
Kalos had a solid design and concept but was too easy and had too few original Pokémon. ORAS had a good main story but lacked Postgame content and ditched event mythicals, Sun and Moon improved the number of Pokemon introduced but still lacked in Postgame (until USUM)
Now, Masuda and the other teams don’t have to do that. They can make the real RPG’s with more of the hardcore audience in mind and make Let’s Go games for casuals.
